Animation I Like

My very first assignment as an animation student is to show you certain animations I like, and explain why I enjoy them.  I've chosen 10 animations I love, if it for simple animation, story, atmosphere, or simply the thought behind them

Land Before Time(1988)

Don Bluth is an excellent character animator. This film is great at showing complex and animated character expressions from the deepest depression to the purest of joy. I enjoy this film since I find the characters to be very relatable and enjoyable to watch.

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild(2017) - Horse Animation

The Attention to detail we find in Breath of The Wild is astounding, but one detail I love is just how realistically the horses move. They have a nice, heavy feeling to them and depending on how fast you go the animations change depending on what kind of gait a horse would use. Even the way the horse back up is realistic. As a person who grew up with them I absolutely adore the love they gave to these horses.

The Prince of Egypt(1998)

Old DreamWorks animation was the absolute best. A great example is the beautiful movie The Prince of Egypt which takes on a well known Bible story about Moses, who saved the Jews from persecution. The backgrounds create a sense of grandiosity making people seem small and insignificant as if god is watching over them. The details in the animation is really amazing when a miracle happens, which conveys the power of god in a great way. With a magical soundtrack it makes a great movie regardless of religious believes.

Ponyo(2009)

Ponyo is one of the most expensive movies made by Studio Ghibli, for a good reason. A good chunk of the movie has all the characters are surrounded by water. Water animation can be difficult, and it's a huge part of this movie, which makes it impressive how good it looks. My favorite part however is the vibrant color palette that just makes you feel good.

Song Of The Sea(2015)

Song of the sea is a real art movie. All the backgrounds are super detailed and the story is fantastical and fresh. I love this movie because of all the storytelling made possible by its beautiful backgrounds, and all the clever use textures.

All Dogs Go to Heaven(1989)

Another piece of art with the mark of Don Bluth. This movie has given me quite a lot of nightmares since I first saw it as a child. Though it's not very child friendly the atmosphere in this movie is pretty special. It creates unique places that seems like they could be a part of daily life, from a casino for dogs, a scrapyard where they slept in an abandoned car. The dark color palette really sets the mood, and I love it because of how much it has affected me.

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame(1996) -Hellfire

Frodo is such an underrated Disney villain and I don't get why. The Hunchback of Notre Dame had such a great villain song in Hellfire, with religious imagery, beautiful fire animation and a great song about the moral conflicts the character is experiencing. This movie is one of my favorite disney movies for that reason

Grave Of The Fireflies(1988)

Grave of the Fireflies is a great movie if you want to go into depression after watching it. This movie is so sad the Lion Kings big death scene pales in comparison. This movie uses its art to just hit you in the gut, from mass graves, too children slowly starving to death. As brutal as this movie is I still can't help, but love how much it makes me cry.
Corpse Bride(2015)

I really enjoy the Tim Burton stop motion movies. Stop motion works great for horror with its stiff movements and lifeless eyes. The mood in this movie is absolutely great and the use of lighting in the underworld and the real world has a lovely irony to it, with the real world being cold and dark and the underworld being bright and cheerful. My favorite stop motion movie.

The Goddess Of Spring(1934)

I have kind of an ironic love for this short. It was made before the first fully animated feature film, Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, came out and was used as a test for animators to learn to animate realistic humans, something that didn't go that well. I can't do anything but admiring the attempt. I also love devil Hades, he is hilarious. I adore this short for just being a cheesy mess, and showing what comes with trial and failiure.
